Buying for someone else’s baby is a different problem: you want something safe, something the parents don’t already have, and something that doesn’t end up in a cupboard. This page sorts our researched picks by budget and occasion, and links to the live Amazon.com.au listing for each.
The gifts parents keep are the ones that solve a daily problem. A good swaddle, a portable white-noise machine, a well-made first toy or a carrier they’ll wear every day all beat novelty outfits. If you can, ask what they already have, or check whether they have a registry.
Low-cost, zero-risk choices from our toys and gifts guide and swaddle picks.
Car seats, cots and bassinets are personal, standards-sensitive purchases: the parents need to choose for their car, their space and the current standard, so give money toward them rather than the item. Avoid baby walkers (the ACCC has long warned about them), soft bedding, cot bumpers and pillows (against Red Nose guidance), and toys with small parts for children under three. Check recalls.gov.au if you are buying anything second-hand.
Tell us the baby's age and we'll send a short, standards-checked gift list before Christmas and birthdays.
