How We Choose Products

Every product on For the Love of a Baby is picked by the same process. We do not test products in a lab, and we say so. What we do is apply Australian safety standards and published guidance first, then compare specifications, then read what verified buyers in Australia report after real use.

1. Australian standards come first

Australia has its own mandatory and recommended standards for baby gear, and overseas products often do not meet them. Before a product can appear in a roundup we check the relevant standard: AS/NZS 1754 for car restraints (mandatory; overseas seats are illegal here), AS/NZS 2088 for prams and strollers (mandatory), the Consumer Goods (Infant Sleep Products) Safety Standard 2024 and AS/NZS 2195 for bassinets and portacots, AS 4684 for high chairs (recommended), the mandatory toy standard for children under 36 months, and the Red Nose safe-sleep guidelines for anything your baby sleeps in or wears to bed. Where a listing does not state compliance, we say “not stated” rather than assume it.

2. We prefer Australian sellers

Amazon.com.au mixes local stock with “Global Store” items shipped from the US or UK. Overseas stock can arrive with the wrong plug, a different safety certification and a different warranty. We prioritise products sold or shipped by Amazon Australia or an Australian-based seller, and we flag the exceptions in the copy so you can decide.

3. Specifications, then real-world reports

We compare the specifications that matter for the category (seat width for three-across car seats, folded size for cabin strollers, TOG ratings for sleeping bags, closed-link versus WiFi for monitors) and then read verified-purchase reviews on Amazon.com.au together with Australian sources such as CHOICE, Red Nose, Kidsafe, ProductReview.com.au and Australian parenting sites. We look for patterns across many reviews, not single opinions, and we report the recurring complaints as cons.

4. Why we use price bands, not prices

Amazon’s prices change daily and Amazon’s affiliate rules do not allow us to publish prices that are not fed live from Amazon. So we describe each product as budget, mid-range or premium within its category, and the button on each pick opens the live listing for the current price.

5. How we make money

If you buy through our links, Amazon may pay us a small commission at no extra cost to you. Commissions never decide a recommendation: a product with a higher commission does not rank higher, and we leave out popular products that fail the standards check. See our affiliate disclosure.

6. We update, and we welcome corrections

Standards change (the 2024 infant sleep standard became mandatory in January 2026), listings disappear and products are recalled. We review roundups regularly, check recalls.gov.au, and remove or re-rank products when the evidence changes. If you spot an error or a product we should look at, tell us through the contact page.
